Happy President's Day to you all! Hope your weekends were great and your job let you have today off. Mine unfortunately does not so good news for you, you get another blog.
Before I review the movies I wanted to discuss a news headline I read today: A Father in Egypt named his daughter Facebook... Really!? Now, I can guess his reasoning was to honor the website which is credited as one of the major driving forces that led the Egyptian revolution. But seriously!? The first question that pops into my mind is do you think MySpace will allow her to have an account? I think it is a sort of nice honor, but I really feel bad for that girl's future. And kids thought Sarah spelled Cerra was dumb... Wait til the kids get ahold of Social Networking girl. I can't wait til a family in the South follows suit with triplets named Facebook, Farmville and Poke.
In a world where the creators of Farmville are valued at $10 billion, and Borders Bookstores are going bankrupt, I am truly beginning to fear where are headed. If you were planning on naming your daughter Flickr, I hope I haven't ruined it.
Ok, no more current events jokes for this blog.
I Am Number Four: I will admit I am a fan of the comic book movie format. Where the subject of the film discovers unknown powers, meets love interest, then crosses villain and must use those powers and defeat personal obstacles and romantic quarrels to save the day. But I am about to throw in the towel and say enough is enough and I Am Number Four can be credited for pushing me over the edge. I Am Number Four may be the biggest jumbled up mess of an action movie I have seen in a long time. Now, I am a pretty attentive movie goer but I had a really tough time figuring out what the hell was going on in this movie. I am now going to try and recall the story to you all, spoiler free.
I Am Number Four is a about a high school surfer who after receiving a third scar on his leg is rushed out of town by his "uncle?" to Ohio. While in Ohio he meets a cute girl, angers her ex and suddenly discovers he has magical powers after getting really sweaty and all luminescent in science class. The "uncle?" then explains that he is kind of like Superman but there are 9 of them, and 3 have died, then we get this epic moment of narration where he yells out "I am NUMBER FOUR!" It was my favorite part of the movie. I mean how awesome is it, that 30 minutes in the movie you get the main character to remind you the name of the movie. This should happen more often! Not really. Then we get introduced to these 8 feet tall guys who have really weird faces and tattoos all over them that are searching for surfer boy because they are the ones who killed everyone on Krypto... I mean the planet where surfer boy is from. Well they meet up and a whole bunch of dumb goes down.
Now I understand that most comic book movies are a bit cartoonish and far-fetched. Spiderman flinging his webs down New York city is a bit cheesy. A man in a Black cape and armor suit falling gracefully is a bit weird. But the reason these films work is they are somewhat dipped in reality. I am Number Four throws out every bit of logic and coherence. It was like watching a live motion Saturday morning cartoon. It never explains anything. I never found out what his super powers were and when we meet another member of the 9, she has even more powers that are even more unexplained. Now, don't get me wrong, I like big action and explosions, but when the explosions are caused by red lazers and blue orbs I just want to know why!!! The lead actor is terrible and has the emotional range of a lemon. Like I said in my early review, it is not a good thing when the best part of your film is the performance from the girl from Glee.
Nathan rating: 1 and a 1/2 star
Unknown- So I think I have seen this movie before. A man gets into an accident, then wakes up and who he thinks he is is not who he is, and there is no clue to his identity... No, this is not another sequel to Bourne Identity, and Matt Damon is not the star. Instead it is another action film starring Liam Neeson.
Now I am going to be a little more brief in my criticism of this film. What Unknown lacks in originality it makes up for in creativity. The many twists and turns in this film takes you on quite the ride and you don't really ever see any of them coming.
The film is very similar to 2010's Salt starring Angelina Jolie. Both are smart, action thrillers with very solid leads. Liam Neeson is very good in this film and many times I just wanted to root for him to find his daughter, but then I realized that this movie wasn't Taken. But all mocking aside this film is good, not great. It drags in several places and is a bit longer than what it should be. But as far as action films go. It is pretty good.
Nathan rating- 2 and a 1/2 stars
