Happy Fall! The leaves are falling and the temperature is where we all remember it being at in October... 89 degrees! Ok, maybe not.
October is one of my favorite months, Football is in full gear, baseball playoffs are kicking off, and Oscar movie season kicks off. Oh how I love Oscar movie season.
Oscar Movie Season means more movies with Robert Downey Jr, Ryan Gosling and Anne Hathaway, and less movies with Megan Fox, Channing Tatum and Paul Blart. We get movies based on really interesting premises like the creation of Facebook (The Social Network) or the fascinating true story of a man trapped under a rock for 5 days (127 Hours.) And we get less movies about screwing up Artificial Insemination and Betty White playing a horny old lady.
I love movies! But most importantly I love GOOD movies! Summer is reserved for popcorn flicks that feature dozens of explosions, a Victoria's Secret Model and as many remanufactured ideas as possible. (SEE ANY MICHAEL BAY FILM) But fall is filled with movies with the Oscar formula. Great Acting, Great screenwriters, great plots and original material.
Here is a list of my top 6 movies I am looking forward to this Oscar Season:
6. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1- Oh boy do I have a soft spot for these movies. The Harry Potter films are like a fine wine, they just keep getting better. As the actors and the storyline has matured we have been given the great pleasure of seeing outstanding films. And I am sure the first installment of the two-part finale will not disappoint.
Releases November 19
5. Blue Valentine- You might not have heard of this film, but it stars one of my favorite actors, Ryan Gosling. Gosling seems to blow me away in every movie I have seen him in (Lars and the Real Girl, Half Nelson, and yes, The Notebook.) This time he stars alongside Michelle Williams, an outstanding actress, in a tale of an extremely dysfunctional relationship (we wouldn't know anything about that huh!?) The trailer looks good, and there is a lot of oscar buzz about both performances.
Releases December 31
4. Black Swan- Natalie Portman just might win an Oscar this year for this film. Portman stars as an aging ballerina who is threatened by a younger version of herself in Mila Kunis. The trailer looks great and the visionary director Darren Aronofsky never seems to fail on bringing something visually stunning to the screen. This movie I am sure will mess with your mind, but in the end be a great experience.
Releases December 1
3. True Grit- No John Wayne here, but the Coen Brothers (Fargo, No Country for Old Men) remake the old Western classic. Jeff Bridges steps in to the role that won John Wayne an Oscar. With Bridges being perfect for the role, Matt Damon and Josh Brolin starring as well, and the Coen Brothers being among the best filmmakers out there. It is sure to be a great film.
Releases Christmas Day
2. The Fighter- One of my favorite memories of my childhood was watching boxing with my Dad. My favorite fight of all time I got to see with him was Mickey Ward and Arturo Gatti. The fight which took place in 2002 is regarded as the fight of the century and includes one of the greatest rounds in the history of the sport. WELL, sounds like it would make for a great film. Mark Walhberg stars as Ward, in the film about his rise and struggles in the world of boxing. I am a sucker for boxing films, and this one has a great cast starring Wahlberg, Christian Bale and Amy Adams. Sure to be a great film.
Releases December 10
1. 127 Hours- Danny Boyle returns to the directing chair after winning the Oscar for Best Picture with Slumdog Millionaire. This time he tells the thrilling, unbelievable true story of Aron Ralston. A mountain climber who finds himself trapped under a rock for 5 days and has only one way of survival (prepare for one of the hardest scenes in movie history to sit through). The story itself is amazing and early reviews say that James Franco gives one of the greatest performances in years as Ralston. Sure to be Oscar bait, and sure to be outstanding.
Releases November 5
Here is a list of Honorable mentions, movies that won't win Best Picture but will be worth seeing:

I can't wait for True Grit!!
