SO I may owe you all an apology. Over the last few months I have been blogging on here rather routinely. This blog is meant to be devoted to entertainment with a large focus on movies. I try to keep you all in the loop on what is coming out and how good or bad the movies are. I am very fortunate to have a job that allows me to sit around and watch movies and even more fortunate that I get to write about them and assume people care.
What I would like to apologize for is the timing of the blog's creation. The format of what the blog is now came to be around the beginning of this year during what I like to call the Oscar Lull season, January to April. October to December is the peak of good movies. This is when studios pick their Oscar front runners to be released so they will be fresh in the minds of voters, this was when King's Speech, Social Network, Black Swan, True Grit... and many more came out last year. But as soon as the Oscar deadline passes we see the movies that have zero ambition of winning Oscars, so in other words we get films directed by Adam Sandler, films starring an insane Nicolas Cage and another Big Momma's House movie.
So the readers of this blog have had to witness me seeing terrible movie after terrible movie, which I fear may make them think that I am an extremely bitter person. And the results to my poll on my page came back unanimously that I complain too much. Ha!
But thank the heavens, creativity, and Jake Gyllenhaal! There will be no complaining and bitterness today!
Source Code is the first great movie of 2011. This is the second film from young director, Duncan Jones, his first being Moon which I would strongly recommend seeing. What Jones brings to this film, which he brought in Moon is a very creative take on the thriller genre.
Sci-fi is a genre that is often attempted but in my opinion often fumbled. It takes a lot of work to bring something new to the table and plausibly, effectively pull off something that seems impossible. What makes this film work is you never have the chance to raise questions and doubt the premise because you are too enthralled in the story, characters and pending conclusion.
Jake Gyllenhaal is outstanding in what possibly may be his best work. He is wonderfully cast in a role that allows him to show the range of an action hero, romantic lead, and terrible victim all in one movie. Michelle Monaghan is great, as well as the incredibly talented Vera Farmiga.
The relatively short running time that comes out to be just over an hour and a half is extremely refreshing. The film moves quick, the action contentiously drives, and you find yourself on the edge of your seat throughout.
Source Code is definitely my favorite movie of the year so far and one of my favorite Sci-fi films in a long time. Go see this movie, you will not be disappointed.
