Wednesday Mix Tape and The Awful Karaoke Experience

Last night, I had an experience.

I was hanging out with a couple of my friends and one of them got a call from his girlfriend. Said friend's lady wanted him to meet her out at a karaoke bar. Thus, he asked me if I would drive him out there. It was 9:30 on a Tuesday night, so I thought, "Why Not!?"

What followed was the most stereotypical Karaoke experience of my life.

I know deep down I should have turned around and walked out when I was greeted by the EXTREMELY off tune notes of Rascal Flatts as I walked in. The courageous karaoke singer was a larger lady in her mid 40s who had about as much confidence as 1st grade Nathan asking a girl to dance, NONE. And coincidentally we happened to have the same move, the sway back and forth while everyone around watching observes uncomfortably. To that lady, I respect you for singing and God Bless the broken vocal cords that led you straight to karaoke.

The bar itself was sketch. Located a few blocks north of Downtown in an area of all closed down shops and former bars I don't know what I was expecting. But then again, Karaoke bar and classy were never to be known as synonyms.

The experience didn't get better. The DJ to give herself more time to prepare the next gem, put on some music to provide a transition. What did she choose you ask? She made the amazing choice of selecting my least favorite band of all-time Nickelback. Fail!

Then a young lady walked up to the stage. This lady in my opinion was clearly not 21. But was dressed in a nice blue dress and was clearly nervous/excited for her selection. The first few notes of a clearly theatrical song came blurring over the speakers, then the girls hand without the microphone made a fist and she was powered and ready to emote.

Her song of choice, "I Dreamed a Dream." Two things were evident here:

1) This girl clearly is a Musical Theatre Major

2) Why in the hell do I know this song is from Les Miserable? You call it suspish, I call it cultured.

The girl was clearly treating it like an audition for this sketch bar's Winter Performance of Phantom of the Opera. But what made everything amazing/ridiculous, was her friend in the first row recording the entire thing on her iPhone. Hopefully you all can search it on YouTube later today.

There were some other interesting moments:
- a 6 person crew doing the Cupid shuffle with the 65 year old woman clearly outdancing everyone
- The obligatory performance of Don't Stop Believing and Sweet Caroline
and
- The 20 minute deep consideration of me doing Lose Yourself by Eminem (I did not)

At the end of the night, I realized Karaoke is always a terrible experience but one filled with so much ridiculousness that staying home, sleeping and being well rested for work just can't provide.

And now, this week's Wednesday Mix Tape selections:
Young The Giant- My Body-
If you read my VMA Blog then you know this band really impressed me. I have been listening to them all week. Here they are for you.

Muse- Starlight
I have been interested in Muse for several years but could never take that leap into fandom of them. I was lucky enough to catch them live at Kanrocksas earlier this month and since then I can't stop listening to this song.

The Tallest Man on Earth- Thrown At Me
No, this is not my band's name!
A great friend of mine showed me this video yesterday. I am always a sucker for guy/girl duos and this one is beautiful with the contrast in vocals. Give it a listen.
